The first image took about an hour to render at 5000x4000, the second took 8 hours at 1280x1024.

Sometimes MC gives a much better result, other times I hardly notice the difference and in your examples I find the MC render blurry and the surface reflection is much better in the non-MC render. And I really cannot say when MC is good to use, because the render times almost always are rediculously big. My normal renders often take half a day or a day if there's VL and/or reflection and/or DoF, so MC might take weeks? ;}
